Credit cards can be one of the best ways to build a credit score and also give you financial security. Credit cards are a source of ready cash for any occasion. If you need money in advance of your paycheck to perhaps buy an item that is only on sale that day, or need an emergency flight to visit an ill relative, or maybe you just want peace of mind whilst on vacation, to rest assured that you have ample money to enjoy yourself. Most cards will start you with a small balance (based on your credit history) but will often start to increase the limit as you build up a good payment history with them. So long as you have a decent credit history and score you are likely to get approved. If you don't yet have a credit history then there are cards available that are designed towards new credit starters.

What do I do now I have one?

There are many uses for a credit card. The most common is shopping, either online or in traditional stores. One thing you must always remember is that credit cards are a great way to build a credit score, but they must be used responsibly. Only spend what you can afford to repay, don't go rushing out with your new card and spend it all then start worrying when the bill arrives. If treated with respect a credit card can be a very very useful item. Almost all stores will accept credit cards these days, and they are a safer alternative to carrying cash in this day and age. They also give you access to funds when you need them. I'm sure there has been times when you have spotted a bargain that you really want but didn't have the cash on you at that moment and missed out. Well a credit card can solve that and many other problems. If you suddenly need to book an airline ticket or rent a car, its covered.

Online shopping is another feature covered by credit cards. With the advance of technology online shopping has grown into an enormous business with Billions of dollars being spent online every year. People shop online because its convenient and usually cheaper and far less stress. They can sit in front of the computer with a cup of coffee and go from shop to shop with out having to worry about parking or crowds of shoppers. Most of the time the prices are cheaper because the merchant doesn't have as many overheads as a normal "bricks and mortar" store. Also, the stores are open 24 hours a day 365 days a year, they don't close for the holidays. Online shopping is the way of the future and the credit card is a key player in that.
